Nul (0) er det første i rækken af naturlige tal (hvis det hører til denne række - ellers er det det første tal i 
). Det naturlige tal efter nul er et (eller en).
Brugen af tallet 0 (nul) som betydende ciffer er en forholdsvis sen tilføjelse til matematikken. Det var indiske matematikere, som først indførte dette tal [1] og det blev første gang gennemtænkt af Brahmagupta i et værk fra 628. Det har været drøftet, om tallet er opstået på baggrund af den buddhistiske religions insisteren på en homøostatisk tilstand midt mellem ondt og godt, mørkt og lyst, koldt og varmt, negativt og positivt, at mangle og at eje, sygdom og sundhed osv.
Dog skal det bemærkes at Mayaindianerne var før europæerne i anvendelse af tallet/cifferet nul. [2] [3]
