English: IWM caption : THE DIEPPE RAID, 19 AUGUST 1942 Lt Col The Lord Lovat, CO of No. 4 Commando, at Newhaven after returning from the raid.

Español: Por lo general, al principio fuerzas relativamente pequeñas llevaban a cabo las incursiones, éstas se realizaban por la noche y eran de corta duración. Posteriormente, las operaciones crecieron en complejidad y tamaño. Los comandos recibían formación y operaban en un completo secreto, y producían un efecto desmoralizador sobre las fuerzas costeras alemanas, mientras adquirían gran fama entre el público británico, comparable a la conseguida por los pilotos de caza, que raya en el mito. Al avanzar el curso de la guerra, los comandos operaron cada vez más con la función de tropas de choque, (a veces las formaciones llegaban a ser similares a una brigada), y en ocasiones junto con la infantería.
