In accordance with the terms of the Treaty of Frank-fort-on-the-Main (May 10, 1871), which closed the Franco-Prussianwar, France ceded Alsace and German-speaking Lorraine to Ger-many and paid a Mar indemnity of 5,000,000,000 francs ($1,000,000,-000).
