Parameters

Purpose

These geoboxes were created:

  • To provide a means for creating consistently-formatted tables and summarizing information
  • To improve navigation between articles within closely-related subjects
  • To maximize the ease of creating and upgrading infoboxes
  • To improve the ease of transferring information to other language Wikipedias by using standardized, database-like fields

Features

  • no need to format the input data in any way; it is handled by the template
  • automated locator dot placement on maps, based on coordinates or X/Y values
  • automated unit conversion from metric to imperial or reverse
  • automated wikilinking
  • additional fields
  • background maps
  • foldable list on all multiple fields
  • international categories, (e.g., World Heritage Site), eliminating the need for a second infobox on the same page

Other guidelines

This general, multi-purpose geobox template duplicates features contained in various other, more specific geography and place infobox templates (like {{Infobox settlement}} for settlements, and {{Infobox protected area}} for protected areas. In general, editors should not change from one to the other without good reason or broad consensus.

Exceptions where broad consensus has been achieved are:

Geobox er en infoboksskabelon for alle typer af geografiske (indtil videre kun implementeret i kommuner og sogne) data. Med denne skabelon antages det, at der ikke er yderligere behov for skabeloner til geografiske data.

Nedenfor er ikke oversat fra svensk, da denne skabelon er i brug.

Fördelar

Observera: man behöver inte formatera inmatade data på något vis, allt sköts av mallen.
  • automatiska lokaliseringspunkter (locator dots) på kartor, baserat på koordinater eller X/Y-värden
  • automatiska statsflaggor och regionala flaggor
  • bakgrundskartor
  • infällbara listor för alla fält som omfattar flera rader
  • internationella kategorier (till exempel Världsarv), som gör att ytterligare faktarutor på samma sida inte behövs
  • automatisk wikilänkning

Nackdelar

  • många ovidkommande parametrar
  • ofta parameternamn på engelska

Varför infördes Geobox?

För att

  • standardisera och gallra i snårskogen av inkonsekventa geografiska mallar,
  • förbättra navigationen mellan relaterade artiklar,
  • förenkla införandet och underhållet av faktarutor,
  • förbättra informationsöverföringen mellan olika språkversioner av Wikipedia, genom standardiserade fält och
  • för att en lång rad geografiska faktarutor saknades på svenskspråkiga Wikipedia.
