Potrivit anexei nr. 1, stema municipiului Sighişoara se compune dintr-un scut triunghiular roşu cu marginile rotunjite, încărcat de o cetate de argint cu 3 turnuri crenelate.

În poarta cetăţii se află un leu rampant, poziţionat spre dreapta, încoronat şi limbat, ţinând în labe o spadă, totul de aur.

Scutul este timbrat de o coroană murală de argint cu 5 turnuri crenelate.

Semnificaţiile elementelor însumate

Cetatea reprezintă oraşul-cetate care în Evul Mediu a fost un important centru economic, cultural, militar şi religios. Cetatea Sighişoara este înscrisă pe lista Patrimoniului Mondial UNESCO, fiind cea mai bine păstrată cetate medievală locuită, astfel încât asigură şi în prezent faima localităţii în ţară şi în lume.

Leul de aur, rampant, purtător de spadă, încoronat şi limbat, semnifică statutul juridic pe care l-a avut în trecut municipiul, care îi conferea dreptul de a pronunţa pedeapsa capitală jus gladii -, precum şi remarcabila sa capacitate de apărare. Leul simbolizează puterea, frumuseţea, generozitatea, iar astăzi semnifică forţa de renaştere şi de înflorire a localităţii.

Coroana murală cu 5 turnuri crenelate încadrează localitatea în categoria municipiilor.
