In October 2020, Ulrich blew his cover as a mole after exposing North Korea's weapons program as well as procedures to circumvent international sanctions.[2] During the infiltration, Ulrich teamed up with the award-winning danish documentary film director Mads Brügger and managed to record plans of large-scale illegal weapon distributions, meth-amphetamine laboratories, and Money laundering in the documentary series "The Mole: Undercover in North Korea", which won "best documentary" at the Danish Robert Awards in 2021.[3]

Biography[redigér | rediger kildetekst]

Ulrich 'The Mole' Løvenskjold Larsen (Born 1976, Sealand, Denmark) is a retired chef who spent more than a decade infiltrating North Korea[4]. Due to a chronic illness, Ulrich was forced to early retirement and put his career on hold, and this was when he decided to investigate the supporters of North Korea in Denmark. Posing as a loyal supporter of the North Korean regime, Ulrich Larsen initially started collaborating with the Danish North Korean Friendship Organization, subsequently rising through the ranks of the KFA in Denmark and ending up in the inner circle of the International Friendship Association (KFA)[5]. Here, Ulrich gained the trust of some of North Korea's most influential supporters in the West. For several years, Ulrich was functioning as the official Scandinavian delegate of the KFA[6].

As part of Ulrich's undercover life, he traveled around Europe to fulfill his obligations within the KFA and became a well-known member of the international community. In the documentary "The Mole - Undercover in North Korea" we follow Ulrich's journey as a mole, working within The KFA. The Mole project leads Ulrich back and forth to North Korea and around the world to initiate a big weapon and drug deal between North Korea and a fake businessman, later to expose how North Korea tries to avoid the harsh sanctions made upon the regime[2].

Ulrich Larsen initiated a close relationship with the President of the International Friendship Association (KFA), Alejandro Cao de Benós, a special representative of the Foreign Ministry of North Korea who allegedly has direct contact with state officials in North Korea[2]. After years of gaining trust, Alejandro Cao de Benós trusts Ulrich with secrets about the Regime and trusts him with confidential tasks, hereby himself becoming a key actor in the plan to expose the regime. Through covert recordings of negotiations between regime representatives and the fake businessman, it is caught on tape that North Korea is ignoring United Nations  (UN) sanctions to trade oil, drugs, and money[7]. The documentary shows the unforeseen revelation of Ulrich's true identity to Alejandro Cao de Benós and his breach of trust to the North Korean regime - but also the full truth to Ulrich's unsuspecting wife, for whom Ulrich's double life comes as shocking news[8].

Ulrich Larsen in the documentary[redigér | rediger kildetekst]

The documentary The Mole: Undercover in North Korea, is instructed by Danish film director Mads Brügger, who was contacted by Ulrich Larsen to make a documentary about the project. Previously, Mads Brügger has made a North Korea-critic movie "The Red Chapel", which became an award-winning movie for its highly controversial scenes. Ulrich becomes the channel between North Korea and Mr. James, a made-up businessman, acted by Jim Latrache posing as a wealthy Norwegian businessman who is willing to initiate illegal business with North Korea. The two men travel around the world to meet with North Korean diplomats to negotiate a large illegal trade deal involving cross-continental missiles, weapons, and methamphetamine. The purpose of the scheme is to expose how North Korea is bypassing international sanctions and initiating highly illegal activities outside of North Korea. After several years of Ulrich being an undercover mole, Alejandro Cao de Benos confide with Ulrich about finding people to invest in North Korea. Ulrich Larsen, Mads Brugger, and Mr. James decide to seize the opportunity, allowing them to shed light on a myriad of hidden truths, which the regime does not want the world to know about. The documentary premiered in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and The United Kingdom the 11 October 2020, and was directed by the Danish Film-director Mads Brügger[9]. Hugh Griffiths, who was co-ordinator of the UN Panel of Experts on North Korea between 2014 and 2019, called the revelations in the film "highly credible"."This film is the most severe embarrassment to Chairman Kim Jong-un that we have ever seen," said Griffiths.[2]

Personal life[redigér | rediger kildetekst]

Ulrich 'The Mole' Løvenskjold Larsen (Born 1976, Sealand, Denmark) grew up in Southern Jutland, close to the German border, which was divided into east and west Germany in his childhood[10]. This likely had an impact on Ulrich's interest in totalitarian states. Since the documentary was released, Ulrich Larsen has become an international keynote speaker. Ulrich has held lectures and commenced several speaking engagements and of August 2021, Ulrich began a nationwide speaking tour in Denmark[11][12].
