p; SwCL She puzzled over this for some time, butat last a bright thought struck her. Why,its a Looking-glass book, of course! And ifI hold it up to a glass, the words will all gothe right way again. This was the poem that Alice read. JABBERWOCKY. *Twas Irillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimhle in the wade; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe 22 LOOKING-GLASS HOUSE. Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch !Beware the Jubjub bird, and shunThe frumious Bandersnatch / He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought—So rested he by the Tumtum tree,And stood awhile in thought. And as in ufflsh thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,And burbled as it tame ! One, two ! One, two ! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack !He left it dead, and with its headHe went galumphing back. LOOKING-GLASS HOUSE.

It seems very pretty/ she said when shehad finished it, but its rather hard to under-stand ! (You see she didnt like to confess, evento herself, that she couldnt make it out at all.)Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas only I dont exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something: thats clear,at any rate But oh ! thought Alice, suddenly jumpingup, if I dont make hastj I shall have to LOOKING-GLASS HOUSE. 25 go back through the Looking-glass, before Iveseen what the rest of the house is like! Letshave a look at the garden first! She was outof the room in a moment, and ran down stairs or, at least, it wasnt exactly running, but a new invention for getting down stairs quicklyand easily, as Alice
