Hello.

Could anybody explain here the word "Iisjomfruen", title of a tale by Andersen. I understand "fruen" (the maid), but "iisjom" is not to be found elsewhere. In Danish, ice is "is", not "iis", and why "jom" ?

Thank you for any information.

Hello Jacques Richard, "Iis" is simply an old way of spelling "is" (ice). The Danish word "jomfru" means "virgin" or "young woman", "maid" (e.g. Jomfru Maria). In English Iisjomfruen is called The Ice-Maiden. Regards, SorenRK (diskussion) 29. aug 2020, 17:59 (CEST)
