Den 28 december 2014 afsluttede NATO formelt kamp-operationer i Afghanistan og overførede fuld ansvar for sikkerheden - til Afghanistans myndigheder.[1][2] Fra 2011 til 2014 reduserte blandt andet USA sin militære magt i Afghanistan.[3]

På slutten af 2016 [reduserede] USA [sitt] andtal soldater til rundt 8 400; de var stasjonert på fire steder: Kandahar, Bagram, Jalalabad og Kabul.[4][5][6][7] (Tidligere forventet man at styrken af NATO-soldater skulle være rundt 13 000 includert [rundt] 9 800 soldater fra USA, samt 26 000 underleverandører til militærvæsenet.)[8][9][10]

Efter begyndelsen af Operation Resolute Support

Slaget om byen Kunduz. Den 27. september 2015 var ANA fortrængt til flyplassen og områder rundt

Slaget om byen Kunduz i Kunduz-provinsen, varede mellom 24 april 2015 og 14 oktober 2015. Modstandsfolk tok byen på 27 september 2015. Afghan National Security Forces tok tilbage byen d. 14. oktober 2015.[12]

2016 fredsaftale

Den 22. september 2016 signerte Afghanistan's myndigheder en fredsaftale med Hezb-i-Islami.[13][14] Aftalen blev formaliseret på d. 29. september: præsident Ashraf Ghani og Hekmatyar signerede aftalen.[15]

2017

I begyndelsen af januar 2017 skrev The Marine Corps Times at 33 distrikter, som ligger i 16 provinser, er under kontrol af modstandsfolk; 258 distrikter er under myndighedernes kontrol mens 120 distrikter er det tvil om hvem som kontrollerer.[16]
