District line er en London Underground-bane, farvet grøn på netværkskortet. Det er en "sub-surface"-bane, hvilket betyder at den i de centrale områder løber i højtliggende cut-and-cover-tunneler. Det er den travleste af netværkets "sub-surface"-baner. Ud af de 60 stationer, som banen betjener, er de 25 under jorden. To af rutens fire (Richmond og Wimbledon) vestlige grene er også de eneste baner i hele netværket, der krydser Themsen på bro og ikke i tunnel. Selvom District line er kun er netværkets fjerde længste bane, betjener den flere stationer end nogen anden bane.

District line blev anlagt af Metropolitan District Railway (MDR) og åbnede i etaper fra 1868. MDR blev senere købt af Charles Yerkes, der skabte dele af Underground-grupperingen indtil det blev nationaliseret i 1930'erne. Den havde grene til Uxbridge og Hounslow West, som nu begge drives af Piccadilly line. Østgående tog kørte så langt som til havnebyen Southend-on-Sea i Essex fra 1. juni 1910 og til Shoeburyness fra 1911, indtil 30. september 1939 (nu en del af London, Tilbury and Southend Railway). Mellem 1. marts 1883 og 30. september 1885 betjente banen også stationer fra Ealing Broadway til Windsor, ved kørsel på Great Western Main Line.

Tog[redigér | redigér wikikode]

De fleste af District lines afgange køres med D-materiel, selvom Wimbledon til Edgware Road-togene køres med C-materiel, grundet kortere perroner mellem High Street Kensington og Edgware Road. D-materiellet blev renoveret mellem 2005 og 2008, hvor det fik Underground-farverne rød, hvid og blå i stedet for de tidligere umalede aluminiumoverflader, der blev udsat for skader af graffitivandaler. Materiellet fik også en komplet indvendig renovering og blev udstyret med videoovervågning og skærme med passagerinformation.[2] Togene bliver vedligeholdt på Ealing Common Depotkort 61 og Upminster Depot.kort 62

Fra 2013 vil både C- og D-materiellet gradvist blive erstattet af nyt S-materiel fra Bombardier Transportation.[3] Vognparken forventes at være fuldstændigt fornyet i 2016.[2] De nye tog, der er kortere udgaver (7 vogne) af de nye tog, der allerede kører på Circle, Hammersmith & City og Metropolitan lines, vil have air condition. Da de vil være længere end de tog der benyttes i øjeblikket, skal nogle stationernes perroner forlænges.[4]

Nuværende betjeningsmønster[redigér | redigér wikikode]

Følgende betjeningsmønster kører på District line uden for myldretiden (frekvensen i myldretiden er typisk højere):

  • 6 tog pr. time Ealing Broadway – Tower Hill
  • 6 tog pr. time Richmond – Upminster
  • 6 tog pr. time Wimbledon – Upminster
  • 6 tog pr. time Wimbledon – Edgware Road
  • 3 tog pr. time Kensington (Olympia) – High Street Kensington (kun i weekenden). På hverdage med messe kører 2 tog pr. time.

I alt kører der 18 tog pr. time mellem Earl's Court og Tower Hill.

Sikkerhed[redigér | redigér wikikode]

Primo 2009 skete tre sikkerhedsfejl på banen. Alle tre var registreret for at tog havde passeret rødt signal. I august 2009 blev det reporteret at banen havde fået mindre end en måned til at forbedre sikkerhedsfunktionerne ellers ville der blive stillet sagsanlæg, inklusive midlertidige lukninger af banen.[6][7]

Øvrige operatører[redigér | redigér wikikode]

Upminster, Barking, West Ham og Fenchurch Street Stationer (for Tower Hill) betjenes også af c2c. Billetter er gyldige hos begge operatørerne, og Oyster cards kan benyttes på denne del af c2c's rute. South West Trains kører af og til på District lines Wimbledon-gren mellem East Putney og Wimbledon, når der er sporarbejder eller problemer på hovedbanen, selvom togene ikke standser på nogen af de mellemliggende stationer.

I populærkulturen[redigér | redigér wikikode]

  • Den fiktive Walford East Station fra BBC's tv-serie EastEnders ligger på District line, i stedet for Bromley-by-Bow. Fra 4. februar 2010 bruger EastEnders optagelser af District line-tog i overlæg til deres afsnit, der viser togene kører ind på den fiktive station Walford East, der er en del af settet.
  • Sheffield-bandet Milburn har skrevet en sang med titlen "The District Line", der refererer til London.
  • Den canadiske guitarist Pat Travers har skrevet en sang med titlen "Life in London", der nævner District line.
  • Dubstep-artisten Rusko producerede en sang kaldet "District Line", der var med på hans album "OMG"
